Gretchin is a core well respected member of the community. One of the town elders, not the one the townspeople like to go and find. Gretching knows the candle maker and spends much time with. The candle maker sets out candles and one is blessed by Elspeth. Gretchin has been helping collect the bees wax for the blessed candles. He has been finding bee hives for extra wax. The hives that are found are not producing anymore but they are being inhabited by other insects. Holly has been helping put out the decorations for the mid winter festival.
There has been a disease in town that has been lingering. It hits in the winter it is called frost fever. The ends of their fingers and toes go blue they eventually completely frost over causing their heart to stop. It is hard to treat because the warming herbs only grow in spring.
The black lake is in the forest north by north west of out clearing area. Not far from a reasonably travelled road. The black lake is called Dublin. The children are told to stay from the pond because a Kelpie lives in the pond and it will take and drown them.
It is the Monday before the solstice. Hannah knocks on the door of Gretchins house, he answers the door. Hannah says “It is gone! The winter candle is gone!”. She saw the candle become blessed at midnight and then it was gone in morning. Gretchin reassures Hannah and tells her to keep the house locked.
The covern gathers at Hannahs house.
There is an open window near the open window the floor boards are wet. The candles are hung on a rack with joined wicks in the middle of the room. Several of the candles are arcanely enchanted these are kept on a separate rack. The candle on the floor is not from this batch. It was snowing last night so the rain is probably
Gretchin remembers that Elspeth is a human god not a wild god. Human and wild gods are opposed. The wild gods could have taken the candle. Holly wakes the elm tree outside the house and asks it if anything has been happening lately. The tress says people have been loitering in the alley lately.
Serduke goes outside and tries to find tracks but a cold malignant wind blows snow in front of the window. Roger uses Hooter to scan around the window. There is a torn bit of suede that is midnight black on a nail. Hooter tries to eat it but Roger wrestles it from him. This is quite expensive and Serduke remembers that black suede is normally worn by high class thieves.
Kaeli spots half a hand print on the window but it is missing half the ringer above the second knuckle. Fingers are normally lost during manual labour such as carpentry. Gretching remembers that two farmsmen, the blacksmiths apprentice, some paupers and one of wealthy family sons cut off hisfinger as a dare, are all missing various fingers. Kaeli suggests that missing fingers could be a consequence of surviving winter fever.
The covern sets out to go and investigate the various suspects. Gretchin drops in to the blacksmith to check the apprentice. The apprentice is missing his pinky finger not the ring finger. The suspects hand is large for a women but small for a man, the fingers are slender.
As we approach the door of the foxitsons, someone disappears from view. The person is wearing a cloak and moves with a limp. Boson is the head of the foxitson family.
Serduke and Holy follow the hooded figure to the abandoned temple of Ku the old god of the birds. In this temple a cult devoted to Ku undertakes bird worship. Ku was surplanted by Elspeth the true protector of the human race.
Holy turns into a fox and follows Serduke. They both enter the temple through different entrances. Serduke sees robes of the religion and disguises himself as one of the cultists. As Holy enters she dislodges a large pile of mouldy bread and is buried in a pile of it. Holly moves into the next room, from there she can see a number of archways. Serduke peers around from a wooden door near Holly. From the archways they can hear voices talking about something. As they are visible in the archway the two figures standing over another figure back up and draw weapons. Serduke bluffs that he is a priest, he notices that one of the people in the room is missing the requisite finger. The other person is a women and she has all her fingers. Serduke asks “So have you heard about the candle thing”.
The male figure advances on Serduke who palms the wine flask he has been swigging from. He tries to throw the flask at the figure. As the man tries to stab Serduke, Holly jumps up and bites the mans arm. Holly lets go and then tries to charge and bite the womens ankle. Holly mis-times her bite and the women kicks her in the face.
The two assailants back up in to a defensive position but Serduke chases the immediately. Serduke drops the male assailant with a vicious undercut the women rushes to tend to the dropped man. Serduke grabs the women by the hair.
The rest of the covern exits the house of the Foxitsons and wonders were the rest of the covern got to. Roger casts a spell to find Hooter and finds that he is near the old temple to Ku. The remainder of the covern rushes to the old temple to see the temple shake and some snow become dislodged. They enter the temple and see Serduke holding the women by the hair.
The family in the temple were berry pickers who did not join the union and now they are beggars/paupers. The man and the woman are loosely together. Roger picks up the sleeping figure and Serduke grabs the unconscious man. The archways the party came through is now collapsed. The party moves through the other exit suspecting that the temple is almost symmetric.
As they enter the corridor they see a shadowy figure in the distance Roger keep approaching the figure and flashes it with a fizzled sunbeam spell. Roger tries to defend as the angel swings towards him. Roger mistimes the shield defence and Kaeli reaches out to protect him and heals roger as he is pulled out of harms way, roger says ‘thanks mum’. Gretchin rolls an explosive charge at the angel but misses and blows one of the building supports.
Serduke throws the foxed shaped Holly at the ice angel. Holly turns into a bear in mid air and crashes into the angel claws flailing. Serduke follows into the melee.
As Kaeli heals Roger and magic sparks fly from the young teenage girl. This draws the attention of the angel.
The angel lifts its open palm towards Kaeli trying to blow some snowflakes at her. Roger casts a gust of wind spell to deflect the snowflakes away from Kaeli but has to deflect them towards Serduke. Serduke reacts by slicing the hand off of the angel. An explosion noise reverberates throughout the room as Gretching blows up the opposing wall while flying around on his broom stick. The snowflakes land on Serduke sapping his dexterity.
The bear that is Holly mauls the angel statue tearing at it viciously. Serduke slices into the back of the angel splitting its head from the body. As this happens it swings around with its stumpy hand to hit Serduke. Gretching flies around on his broom loosing arrows at the ice angel, the arrows glance off its ice form. Serduke grabs the arm of the ice angel and throws it into the ground. Serduke ‘mounts’ holly the bear
Roger and Kaeli head off to the nearest building with the injured figures. Trying to get the sick girl to a fire to keep her warm. Roger knocks on the nearest door with a smoke fire, the door opens roger bursts through saying “I need to get this poor girl to a fire”. “ My ol’ mum knows you Wendy Hambler and I will make sure you get your potions cheap this week”.
Roger places the girl in front of the fire and wraps her in many blanks placing hooter on her to guard her while holly heads off to get a cure.
In the meantime Roger slaps awake the sleeping man and questions him about the candle. He was going to steal the candle to get money from Boson but his mate Nevin ran off with the candle into the woods. Nevin took the candle and ran into the woods saying that a women needed. Nevin headed out of the east gate towards the black lake called Dublin.
Unconcious Girl: Tully
House Owner: Wendy
Missing Finger Guy: Balarky
The covern decides to keep healing the young girl and stay at Wendy’s place while the bad weather passes. Roger heals the effects of the ice angel snow flakes on Serduke by putting hooter on his head and consulting the big book of things.
We awake at Wendy’s place feeling fairly dodgy from a bad nights sleep due to the blizzard. The covern sets out to Bosons house. They knock on the door vigorously and eventually Nelson the son answers the door bleary eyed. Everyone hears screaming of a woman from the top level. The party races up the stairs and finds the wife of Boson screaming. Her husband is lying in bed with black froth coming out of his mouth staring blankly at the ceiling. He is very dead and the wife is completely losing her mind. She faints and Serduke catches her.
Gretchin searches the room and finds: a folded note on the bedside near the dead man, the window has been professionally removed and replaced within the last 24hrs and he has a ring on his finger, the ring shows a coin being passed from one hand to another. This is the same mark as the sealing wax on the note. Gretchin opens the note: apologies madam but your husband has failed us signed, the investors. Gretchins remembers that the investors bought out the entire mill industry in a town and ran it into the ground.
The rest of the covern inspects the site of the murder while the remaining members console the widow.
Serduke finds chips in the wall outside the window. There is a small gem that was placed intentionally on the window sill. The party continues to search the house for clues about the murder.
The device that was used to scale the wall is the size of a small cart. There is sawdust on the track. We suspect that the people who undertook the assassination where possibly fruit pickers.
The covern quickly drops into the temple to tell the
head cleric that someone has dies before heading out of the eastern gate. There is an after glow of an illusion spell over the eastern gate. This spell points towards the spruce tree. Holly talks to the tree and finds that someone stood near the tree they were short and had small wobbly feet.
Holly turns into a wolf and tries to track two different smells. One smell is leather and cologne the other is linen and cloves. The smells head off into the forest. The covern head out on a perilous journey. They head towards the black lake Dublin. They find a man slumped against a tree he has been encased in the roots of a tree. He is in the late stages of the winter fever disease. The man is wearing fine dark blue suede, the guy has thieves tools in his satchel.
They wake up the man who is encased in the tree. The covern questions the man about the candle. He tell them that the pretty lady took the candle. The party continues to question the man. Eventually, Gretchin feeds the man an explosive potion to end his misery.
Holly investigates the black lake and communes with the spirit in the lake. Serduke and Roger stand defensively about her as she talks to the lake spirit. The lake spirit manifests as a solid form of the ice lady. The spirit says the mistress has the candle. The spirit continually asks Holly to come in the water
The spirit lunges at Holly who turns into a squirell and scurries onto Keali’s shoulder. At the same time Serduke starts to begin an attack sequence towards the spirit. Roger follows Serdukes movement as Gretchin throws a potion at the angel which slows the sequence of combat. Serduke strikes quickly and nimbly slashing at the angel. Gretchin throws black magic at the angel it screams as it burns. He throws another paralysis potion at the motion. As the angle contorts in pain. Rogers mum emerges from the bushes and tells him “LEAVE NOW!”. Roger says “I think you should calm down mum, you are scaring me”. Hilda continues to tell them to leave and covern continues to converse with her. My mum is not wearing her favourite gloves, she is wearing a signet ring.
The covern collectively fights Hilda. Hilda causes the existing ice angel to explode as this happened roger slings hooter at Serduke to free him from paralysis. Kaeli takes the damage of the flaming ice shards of the angel by absorbing the heat into her tea flask. Roger runs around the pond to confront his mum calling the birds of the forest to his aid. The birds land on her and she freezes them into the form of a large ice angel yelling “I taught you all you know, you cannot…..” Gretchin throws an explosive potion in her face. Holly races around as a squirrel and turns into treant embracing the large ice angel so she cannot move. Roger flails ineffectually at his mum with the blunt end of the spear.
The large ice angel spins an throws the treant into the lake. The treant turns into a frog as it hits the lake water. Serduke tries to run around the edge of the lake and his legs slip out from under him as he falls into the water. He digs his sword into the bank and drags himself out of the water. The frog that is Holly lands on his head and they are both dragged out of the water.
Kaeli throws the boiling tea water at the ice angel that is Hilda as Roger tries to get his mums special hand bag with hooter and his spear. Hilda turns the boiling tea water into sharp icicles and throws them at Roger and Kaeli. Gretchins hurls more black magic at the ice angel.
Serduke and Holly emerge from the lake. Serduke says ‘Bear Fast Now’. Holly says ‘Ribbit’. Serduke says ‘Please’. Holly turns into a bear and they charge around the lake towards the ice angel.
They charge into the back of the ice angel claws flailing and weapons flying. Holly tears the back off the ice armour and Serduke cuts down the remaining armour. The ice armour shatters and Roger and his mum fall to the ground. Roger goes up to his mum and says “This is not what you taught me, you are out of line” he promptly punches her in the face and she drops unconscious. Roger searches her bag and finds hooter, the candle and the papers.
The covern trudges back to the city and they go to the temple. The covern hands over the candle to the head priest of Elspeth.
Eventually Hilda wakes and talks to the party about the investors. Hilda says that the investors can be a blessing or a curse, she takes the curse so the others may be blessed. She is contacted via mail and they ask for what they want and she is provided with what she needs to protect the town.
At the midwinter ceremony Gretchin gives a speech to the town about working together. Roger suggests the whole town should wish for co-operation and prosperity. The young teenage girl who was saved from frost fever agrees with Roger and takes the candle. She holds it out in front of the town and says “We wish for prosperity!”, her wish is granted.
