Elsie the butcher asks Metra to deliver a letter to her sister in the wilderness. Elsie says she cannot leave her business to see her sister, the letter is written quickly with a shaky hand. Metra goes to the institute and asks for Thomas and Vhalon. She finds that Thomas has called in sick and asks for his home address.
Thomas lives at 5 Bright Terrace in an extremely compact 2 storey house with a large beech tree on the end of the street. Metra asks a passerby to direct her to Bright terrace and approaches the compact 2 storey house of Thomas. Thomas’s father answers the door, (he is half dwarf): He has a tea towel over his shoulder and his hands are covered in grease. He wears a plain shirt and high breeches with suspenders. “What can I do for you?”. Metra: “Can I see Thomas?”. TD: “Thomas keeps saying he is unwell today but he is just studying. Come in, watch your head on the celling and lights”. Metra is given a brief tour of the house before being taken to Thomas. TD: “Thomas there is a girl here for your?”. Thomas: “Which girl is it?”. Metra: “ I will give you a clue, she has four legs.”.
Thomas looks out the window and sees “Not so Wise Jameson” running down the street with Metra’s spear. Thomas: “ You should put that down, it does not belong to you. She will kill you.”. NSWJ: Brings back the spear expecting a reward. Metra: “you are lucky”. NSWJ: “I know I caught the guy who was running away with your spear”.
Metra: “Are you ok Thomas?”. Thomas: “ Yes I am better now”. Metra: “We have much hardship and travel ahead, read this letter. Thomas: “Are we leaving the city”. Metra: “Yes”. Thomas: “Great!”. Thomas packs his bags and gets ready to leave with Metra. They set out to find Vhalon and Aoife.
From Sara, to Elsie.
Elsie I know that you are busy and I know you don’t have a lot of respect for some of the choices I have made but I have no where else to turn. Bran is up in the mountains again and Romulin has gone missing. I have searched all around the town for him but I can’t search much further as the cold comes down from the mountains as autumn deepens. Anything you can do to help would be greatly appreciated. Tour unworthy sister, Sarah. Town: Broughton.
Metra and Thomas find Aoife eating her regular lunchtime sandwich at the local cop hangout at lunch. Aoife reads the letter and decides that it may be an interesting adventure while she waits for her informants to get her more information on the pigsblood trade. Vhalon is found holding a mans by collar with his cart above his head by Metras pet Artemis. The party gathers in the iron ring. Thomas asks Aoife about where they could buy some warm clothes, Aoife spends the next 15mins explaining to Thomas how buying and selling things is good for the economy.
The clothing store is Nan Pats house. Metra, Thomas and Vhalon all buy Weg Wool Clothes. The hats in the store are shaped like farm animal heads. Aoife cannot deal with wearing wool and buys a fur cloak instead. Everyone buys rations and gets ready to go on a perilous journey. The journey is supposed to take 4 days to the half way point.
Thomas forces everyone to take extra rations over the journey, Metra makes sure we do not get lost and Aoife sets a decent pace for the journey. Metra sends Artemis hunting and he comes back with a rotting hare. Aoife toughs it out and Metra/Thomas tactical vom. Mid-way town is called Shetsie, the town has a wall but there now buildings outside the wall. At the moment the buildings inside the palisade wall are not inhabited. The inhabitants think that the houses in the palisade are on a leyline. Thomas: “Did you know: ‘Leylines change cyclically over aeons’”.
Aoife goes to the trading post and collects some posters on highway bandits. Highway bandits: “Lonely Johnson”, “The Stinger”, “Pot Tooth Boys”: 2 of the 4 boys (30 coins for other posters, 10 coins for each boy). Thomas decides to find more out about the mysterious buildings in the palisade from some elder locals. Thomas begins to play a game like 9 Mans Morris with the elderly gentlemen. The party begins to explore the palisade part of the town to determine what is going on within and why it is so haunted. Based on the patterns of the open doors Vhalon maps where he thinks the leyline is. Aoife and Thomas put a line of stones along this route and shut all the doors. Everyone sleeps. The stones and doors are undisturbed the next morning. The party moves out towards the town of Broughton.
On the second night the camp is assailed by two bears. Vhalon blows his warhorn to awake the party but the bears are undeterred by the noise. The party awakes and groups together near the fire making themselves look big. Thomas casts a spell throwing fireworks at the bear. Metra shoots an arrow at the wiggling slug like thing and it swears in common. Aoife turns to deal with the other bear while Vhalon goes to investigate the swearing wiggling pile. The other bear is trying to steal Metra’s pack Aoife tells the bear to drop it, it does but lunges at her and attacks with tooth and claw. Metra turns and looses an arrow into the bears neck, the bear turns to run but Aoife hacks it down with a blow to the spine. Aoife puts the bear out of its misery with a killing blow to the skull. She notices that the bear is wearing a collar.
Vhalon approaches the swearing bush and finds the man ‘Destined Gurty’ who owns the bears. Aoife checks Destined against the wanted posters and thinks he is the ‘Stinger’ based on the description of the crimes and the age/area. Aoife reads him his rights as Vhalon lifts him up with his shirt collar. The prisoner is manacled to a tree for the night. Vhalon spends the night watching the prisoner and gutting the dead bear for meat.
The party awakes in the morning and sets out to find the bandits camp. Upon getting there the party finds a cave with a cow, many odd items and a large amount of food. They load all identifiable items onto the cow and prisoner to return to the local trading post. All the party grab a sack of food. Vhalon undertakes a more detailed search of the prisoners hideout and finds a location for hiding stuff. The prisoner says: “I keep all the weird shit in there”. Vhalon busts open the hiding hole and reaches into the hole. Weird Items: 1) Sock doll dressed as a bride but it is moth eaten, shard of a bright cyan gem stone (broken corner), bag of something, wicker weaving of an octothorpe. Vhalon determines that the bag is evil and it contains pigs feet. Aoife and Vhalon sanctify and burn the pigs feet before leaving the bandits hide out.
On the way to Broughton we encounter a Weg Sheep which Vhalon stares down. The towns streets are a north-south grid we approach an Inn called the Burnt Apron at midnight, it is bitterly cold.
The party hands over the prisoner to the guard along with the stolen possessions. Aoife collects the bounty on “The Stinger”. The party approaches the house of Sarah to investigate the missing Romulin. Thomas and Metra enter the house of Sarah and find her curled up with a blanket. She explains that her infant son has gone missing.
CLUES/QUESTIONING THE MOTHER:
Have you had any trouble with anyone in the town: dispute amongst the drivers, 6 months ago.
When did the father leave relative to son: father 5th son 10th
Son was in the same room as the mother when he disappeared.
Son never managed to get further than a room or two.
Door was not locked it was opened
Drivers get the three weakest cattle to divide between themselves.
The cattle drivers often visit each others homes homes.
Who are the main people she deals with in town: The young mothers group, meet on Tues/Thurs at The Quarter (expensive inn), has an animal pen they use as a crèche.
Vhalon notices something about the pattern of the buildings that have been burned and uses Artemis to draw a map of the burnings.
Thomas distracts Sarah while Metra and Aoife investigate the house. Aoife notices something extremely chaotic in the floor of the living room. Thomas helps to move Sarah from the living room. Aoife digs into the floor and finds a cyan stone holy symbol (armless ankh), a piece of leather with writing, rusted tuning fork. The leather piece looks like a couriers stamp, something to do with commerce and music. The cyan crystal material is only allowed to be given not traded, it is called cyanite. Leather letters: Written on the leather is: Mapron.
Thomas tries to tap into the magical power that is present. Thomas and Metra head to the mothers meeting to find out more about Sarrah and her relationship with her son/husband.
Sarrah and Bran move in four years ago after being together for a year. Sarrah became increasingly withdrawn. Romulin was a bright cheerful kid. Sarrah became increasingly protective of her son. Aoife and Vhalon spend some more time investigating the ‘leyline’ that passes through the town. They notice that a terrible storm is approaching rapidly along the path of the leyline. Thomas and Metra return and the party decides to stay with Sarrah to make sure she is safe. Aoife inspects the eviscerated cat that Metra had found earlier and finds some weg sheep wool. At the same time Vhalon buries the chaotic holy symbol away from the house so that it does not resonate with the leyline. The party speculates about the child and the father being were-sheep based on the discovery of the wool.
NOTE: I cannot remember exactly why Thomas was outside in the first place…
Thomas is about to enter into the house of Sarrah from the storm and hears his dad calling to him from the storm. Realising it could not be his father Thomas begins to freak out and enters the house telling the party what he has heard. The party decides to follow the figure in the storm to find out what is going on. The party approaches the figure that is calling to Thomas and Vhalon bellows a challenge to the entity. The entity fades from view at the c hallenge and the party notices weg sheep travelling along the path of the wind (the wind is blowing directly along the leyline). The party follow the weg sheep into the storm.
Eventually the party follow the weg sheep into a sheltered alcove. Near the alcove is a cave entrance that the weg sheep move into. The party cautiously follow the weg sheep into their lair. Aoife enters first with a light spell cast on her shield and her weapon stowed. She notices a group of weg sheep crowded near the centre of the room. She cautiously approaches the group of sheep in the centre of the room As Aoife approaches the prone figure a small child clad in a golden fleece emerges from the sheep on the other side of the cave and moves towards the central group of sheep. As the child approaches the sheep part to reveal an injured man that the child tends to. Aoife calls out ‘I can heal this man, let me through.’ She passes her war hammer to Vhalon and approaches the prone figure healing him.
As Aoife tends to the injured man, the party start to talk to the child. They find out that he is Romulin and that the injured man is his father. Romulin speaks in a wistful voice of the spirit that symbiotically shares his body. Romulin/The Spirit explain that they protect the weg sheep from the ‘mountain’. Thomas and Metra remind Romulin that he has a mother who is very worried about him, at the mention of his mother Romulin becomes less aloof. Eventually the party persuade Romulin that he can be both a child and the spirit that protects the weg sheep.
After caring for the boys father the party stay the night with the weg sheep . Vhalon however, travels back to the town in the storm to talk to Sarrah about what has happened to her son and husband.
In the morning the party returns to town with Romulin and his father. They are greeted with great joy by Sarrah who is extremely grateful for what they have done.
